paint by numbers

As long as I can remember I have been fascinated by the idea of numbers guiding the drawing/colouring process. You can be the everyday Rembrandt, Watteau or Whistler. But it is a child’s game, right?

So i was surprised to find that Andy Warhol has some paint-by-numbers works. Investigating further i discovered a whole ‘subculture’ and a rather colourful (excuse the pun!) history of the phenomena.

Propelled by postwar prosperity, increased leisure time, and the democratic idea that anyone might paint a picture, paint by number became a popular pastime in the early 1950s.

By the end of the 1950s, paint by number was taking on a new life as a metaphor. It became a symbol of mechanical performance and mass culture. http://americanhistory.si.edu/paint/rembrandt.html

Apparently, it spread from a popular hobby to an ironic comment on pop culture. Come to think of it, there is really nothing surprising about Warhol picking it up. It is actually the ultimate pop art!
